Pool Academy Students Visit Berlin as Part of GCSE History Trip

Berlin Trip Brings History to Life for Pool Academy Students

Students from Pool Academy have returned from an educational visit to Berlin that saw them explore some of the city’s most significant historical sites linked to their GCSE History studies.

The trip, which takes place each year as part of the school’s GCSE History enrichment programme, focuses on the rise and fall of the Nazi regime and aims to deepen students’ understanding of 20th century European history.

Exploring Berlin’s Historic Sites

During their time in the German capital, students visited a number of locations connected to the events they study in the classroom.

These included the Berlin Story bunker and the Topography of Terror documentation centre. Students also walked alongside a surviving section of the Berlin Wall and toured the Reichstag building.

Other highlights included a guided tour of the Olympic Stadium and a visit to Grunewald Station. Students also explored life in former East Germany during an interactive visit to the DDR Museum.

In the evening, the group took in panoramic night time views of the city from the Fernsehturm TV Tower after sharing a traditional German meal.

Reflecting on the Human Impact of History

A particularly moving part of the visit was the time spent at the Otto Weidt Workshop for the Blind and at Sachsenhausen Memorial, the site of the former Sachsenhausen concentration camp.

Students used the visit to reflect on the human impact of the period while building a deeper understanding of the historical events they have been studying.

Learning Beyond the Classroom
