Why Porthleven’s Bickford Smith Institute has been boarded up
Sheets of fresh plywood now cover every window of the Bickford Smith Institute in Porthleven. It looks dramatic. But the people behind it say it is a stopgap, and a deliberate one.
Porthleven Town Council has boarded up the windows as an interim measure to protect the building and keep the public safe.
The work was carried out with the consent of Cornwall Council’s Senior Development Officer (Historic Environment Planning).

Why the windows have been covered
According to the town council, the boarding will help prevent potential hazards linked to the windows.
It should also protect the inside of the building from storm damage and bad weather.
A temporary step while funding is looked into
The council has been clear that this is an interim measure only. It was put in place to safeguard both the building and the public.
The council has thanked people for their understanding and support.
Longer-term funding arrangements for the Bickford Smith Institute are still being investigated.
