The stone at Porthtowan’s toilets that could cost residents more

A stone wedged under a door might not look like much of a problem. At the public toilets in Porthtowan, it has become enough of one that the parish council has put out a plea to everyone who passes through.

Why a propped-open door is a problem

People have taken to propping the toilet doors open with stones. Parish Councillor Ruth is asking that if you spot one, you move it so the door can close properly behind you.

A door left open invites anti-social behaviour and leaves the toilets in a worse state for the next person. It also damages the doors themselves, and those repairs cost money. Ruth’s point is that the bill does not stop at the door. Over time, the cost of fixing damaged facilities feeds into the council tax precept, which means residents are the ones who end up paying.

“In the long term, that’ll cost residents more, because the Council Tax Precept will need to go up to cover costs,” she said.

The £10 lifetime card

Locals do not have to pay every visit. Residents can buy a lifetime card for a one-off cost of £10, which then covers their use of the toilets. The cards are available from the St Agnes Parish Council offices.

A word for holidaymakers

The message to visitors is warm rather than scolding. “We love you visiting our village to enjoy our beach, but please look after the facilities,” Ruth said.

The parish council took the toilets on after Cornwall Council had planned to close them. A single visit costs 50p, and there is a practical tip for families making the most of it. “If you take all your children with you at the same time, then your 50p will go a long way.”
