Godrevy rescue after inflatables blown out to sea by offshore wind

A stretch of coast that looked calm enough on the evening of 22 June turned into a multi-agency rescue, after several inflatables carrying people were pushed out beyond the shore by the wind.

Portreath Coastguard Rescue Team was tasked following multiple 999 calls reporting several inflatables with people onboard being blown out to sea due to offshore wind conditions at Godrevy.

How the rescue unfolded

The team was quickly on scene alongside St Ives Lifeboat. They established visual contact with the casualties and guided the lifeboat crews to each one, while getting ready to help from the shore.

Everyone was recovered and brought back safely. Safety advice was given on the beach, with a focus on the dangers of offshore winds and the risks of using inflatables and paddle boards in those conditions.

The team was back at station by 2100.

Why offshore winds catch people out

Offshore winds can carry inflatables and paddle boards a long way from shore in a very short space of time. It happens even when the water looks calm and inviting. The surface gives no warning, so people only realise how far they have drifted once getting back becomes a struggle.

Advice for water users

The Coastguard shared a set of reminders for anyone heading into the sea:

• Always check the wind direction and forecast before entering the water
• Avoid using inflatables in offshore winds
• Consider wearing a lifejacket or personal flotation device
• Carry a means of calling for help, such as a phone in a waterproof pouch
• Let someone know your plans and your expected return time
