Upcycle Kernow Project Highly Commended in 2026 MacEwen Award

Upcycle Kernow’s retrofit of a former Second World War workshop in Portreath has been awarded Highly Commended in the 2026 RIBAJ MacEwen Award, one of the UK’s most respected accolades for architecture for a social purpose.

Launched a decade ago, the MacEwen Award recognises architecture that delivers outstanding social, environmental and ethical impact.

Recognised for Social Impact

Crow Architecture’s transformation of the former RAF garage into a warm, accessible repair and reuse hub was delivered with Lane Architects. Both practices are based at Tremough Innovation Centre. Pink Pebble Property Consultants, based at Pool Innovation Centre, were also involved in the project.

The Highly Commended distinction places Upcycle Kernow among a select group of nationally recognised projects championing architecture’s role in supporting the common good.

“The RIBAJ MacEwen Award is a focused and very bright light in a challenging environment, where projects that push for the common good are beacons of hope. To be awarded Highly Commended is validation for, and a celebration of, all the hard work and dedication that everyone involved gave to upcycling the building for Upcycle Kernow.”

Frances said the recognition celebrates the collective effort behind the retrofit of the former RAF workshop, now repurposed to serve the community in Portreath.
