Farming is hard graft. Everybody knows that much. What gets talked about far less is what the long hours, the weather and the worry can do to the people behind it.

That’s the reason Man Down, the Cornwall-founded community interest company that supports men’s mental health, has been thanking the Young Farmers in Probus for some kind fundraising on its behalf.

The organisation went along to collect the cheque in person, and said it was a pleasure to visit.

“We’re extremely grateful for the support,” it said. “Every penny raised helps us continue our work supporting men’s mental health and creating spaces where men can come together, talk, connect and feel less alone.”

Why farming is close to Man Down’s heart

Man Down says it is proud to support the agricultural community because it understands the particular challenges many people in the industry face.

Isolation is one. Financial pressure is another. Add unpredictable weather and the constant demands of farming, and the organisation says all of it can take its toll on mental health.

“Behind the hard work and resilience, people can be struggling in silence, often feeling they have to just get on with it,” it said.

So community, connection and simply having someone to talk to matter a great deal, according to Man Down.

A thank you to the Young Farmers of Probus

In its message, Man Down thanked everyone involved in raising the money for thinking of it and for helping it carry on with its work.

“Your support genuinely makes a difference,” the organisation said. “Stronger communities start with looking out for one another.”

And it signed off with the line it uses to sum up what it’s all about: “Let’s talk about it.”
