Historical Interpretation Board Unveiled in Trefusis Park to Celebrate Cornwall’s First Railway
In a notable event held on February 2nd, the community of Redruth came together to celebrate its rich industrial heritage with the unveiling of a new Interpretation Board in Trefusis Park. This significant addition was organised by members of the Friends of Victoria Park and Trefusis Park, highlighting the historical importance of the Redruth – Chasewater Railway.
The ceremony saw the participation of key local figures, including Dave Trevena and Councillor Ian Thomas from the Friends groups, alongside Mr. Eric Rabjohn, a historian, and Redruth Deputy Town Mayor Councillor Alison Biscoe. Their collective efforts underscore the community’s dedication to preserving and sharing its history.
The Interpretation Board serves as an educational tool, offering park visitors and history enthusiasts alike a detailed look into the Redruth and Chasewater Railway. Established in 1827 by John Taylor, a notable mining engineer and entrepreneur from Norfolk, this railway holds the distinction of being Cornwall’s first. It played a pivotal role in the transport of various goods, contributing significantly to the region’s economic development until its closure in 1915.
CORMAC, the organisation responsible for the maintenance of Cornwall’s environmental and infrastructure projects, was also represented at the event. Community Engagement Officer Lea Thomas, along with managers Dean Tresidder and Melissa Ralph, attended, showcasing CORMAC’s involvement in community heritage projects.
The unveiling of the Interpretation Board in Trefusis Park not only marks a tribute to Cornwall’s pioneering railway but also reflects the community’s commitment to acknowledging its historical achievements. This educational feature offers a tangible connection to the past, inviting visitors to explore and appreciate the legacy of the Redruth and Chasewater Railway and its impact on the region’s development.
