Daffodil-yellow bunting and a packed high street are Redruth’s idea of a proper spring send-off, and the town carries another badge worth just as much fuss, its plastic-free status. The volunteer who has been keeping that status alive is stepping back, and the town needs someone new to take up the reins.

What the Community Lead role involves

Redruth Town Council is looking for a volunteer Community Lead for Plastic Free Redruth, the job of coordinating the town’s efforts and keeping its Plastic Free status in place. Whoever takes it on will work with Surfers Against Sewage, along with local businesses and residents, to champion positive action and cut plastic pollution in the community.

Why the status is worth defending

Plastic Free Communities is the nationwide scheme run by Surfers Against Sewage, the marine conservation charity that has been campaigning against ocean plastic for years. Hundreds of towns and cities across the UK have signed up, each working through their own version of the same basic plan, getting local councils, businesses, schools and residents to cut down on avoidable single-use plastic rather than letting it wash up on beaches and riverbanks. Keeping the status is not a one-off badge. It relies on someone locally carrying the work forward year after year, which is exactly the gap Redruth is trying to fill.

How to get involved

Redruth Town Council has pointed anyone interested to the comments on its Facebook post for a link to the Surfers Against Sewage community page, or they can go straight to the Surfers Against Sewage sign-up page to read what the role involves and register interest. No closing date has been given, so anyone weighing it up has time to make contact before deciding.
