Redruth pair win Oddfellows photo prizes with steam and a lost church
Thirty-seven photographs went in. Every name was taken off before the judge saw a single one. And when the envelopes were opened, two of the three prizes were heading to Redruth.
The Plymouth and Truro District Oddfellows asked members from across the District to capture their favourite memories of summer for its ‘Memories of Summer’ photographic competition. The response was excellent, with 37 entries submitted.

A former professional behind the judging
The job of picking the winners fell to Peter, the District Secretary, who previously worked as a professional photographer.
To keep things fair, every submission was anonymised before it reached him. Faced with a wide variety of subjects and photographic styles, he had a difficult task narrowing it down to three.
“I was genuinely impressed by both the quality and variety of the photographs submitted,” said Peter. “The standard was exceptionally high, and choosing just three winners proved to be a very difficult decision. There were many photographs worthy of recognition, and I would like to congratulate everyone who took part.”
The winners
First place went to Alan, from Redruth, for his intriguing study of steam engine wheels.
Second place went to Katherine, from Plymouth, for her beautiful photograph of lily pads.
Third place went to Ann, also from Redruth, for her photograph of St Piran’s Lost Church.
Peter presented shopping vouchers to Alan and Ann. Katherine received her prize in Plymouth from Brenda, Noble Grand (Chair) of the Plymouth Oddfellows.
Friendship at the heart of it
The District has congratulated all three winners and thanked every member who sent in a photograph, along with Peter for giving his time and expertise to judge, and Brenda for presenting the Plymouth prize.
The Oddfellows says the competition was a reminder that the society is about more than its charitable and community activities. It is also about bringing people together, sharing interests, celebrating individual talents and creating opportunities for friendship.
