Redruth to Host Annual St Piran’s Festival on 7th March
Redruth Set to Burst into Life This March – Here’s What’s Planned for St Piran’s Festival
Redruth is preparing to celebrate Cornwall’s Patron Saint with its annual St Piran’s Festival on Saturday 7th March.
This year’s theme is ‘Gwenton,’ the Cornish word for Spring, and the town is promising a packed day of activity to mark the occasion.
Parade, Blessing and the Trelawny Shout
From 11am, schools, community groups, local dignitaries and Tolgus, Redruth’s giant lamb mascot, will parade through the town. Participants will carry artwork reflecting the festival’s spring theme and hand out daffodils along the way.
As part of the parade there will be speakers, including Grand Bard of the Gorsedh Jenefer Lowe, and a blessing led by Rev Becca Bell. Afterwards, everyone is invited to raise their voices and join in the traditional Trelawny Shout.
Redruth Town Mayor Cllr Alison Biscoe said:
“The St Piran’s Festival is the first major event in the town’s calendar and is a chance for the community to come together after the long winter months to celebrate the start of spring, or Gwenton! Streets all across town will be alive with the buzz of the festival atmosphere with lots of exciting events and activities for all to enjoy.”
Dance, Music and Theatre Across Town
Throughout the day there will be displays of traditional Cornish dance at Tatey Court, with groups including Gwerin and Kekezza performing.
St Rumon’s Gardens, near Murdoch House, will host musical performances from 12.30pm.
There will also be theatre in the afternoon at Redruth Library, where Ed Rowe’s ‘Cornish Caretakers’ will be performed.
Markets in the Market Hall and Bond Street
A market will take place in the newly renovated Market Hall from 11am until 5pm. Traders will be offering a range of products, from traditional Cornish Tartan to homemade treats.
Bond Street will also host a market and performances between 11am and 5pm, organised by the Bond Street Collective.
Redruth Town Clerk Charlotte Williams said:
“There really is so much happening in Redruth for the St Piran’s Festival. With the prospect of the UK Town of Culture on the horizon, there has never been a better time to come along and discover what Redruth has to offer.”
