Visitors and shoppers in Redruth can now get online in the town centre after Redruth Town Council launched phase one of its free public Wi-Fi scheme.

The first stage of the roll-out means people can connect in key central areas including Fore Street, West End, Green Lane and part of Upper Fore Street.

One-Time Registration

Users only need to register once to access the service. After that, they can get online and find information about what’s on in the town centre, helping to enhance the overall visitor experience.

The scheme forms part of a wider infrastructure programme, developed following conversations with residents and businesses who highlighted the need for improved digital connectivity.

Data to Shape Future Events

Alongside providing free internet access, the system includes a Geosense footfall sensor. This will capture data that can be used to help shape future events and strategies in the town.

Redruth Town Mayor Cllr Alison Biscoe said:

“We hope that the first phase of the Town Centre Wi-Fi will support all those accessing the town, allowing them to find out more about the wonderful things Redruth has to offer.”

Town Clerk Charlotte Williams added:

“The system will provide important new data and information that can be used to help shape events, festivals and promotions. Hopefully, we can use the data to help support local businesses, events and town centre activity, and to stimulate economic growth.”

Funded Through UK Shared Prosperity Fund

The free town centre Wi-Fi project has received £22,500 from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, allocated by Cornwall Council’s Good Growth Programme.

In total, Redruth Town Council has received £128,000 to deliver a range of regeneration works. These include improvements to the Market Hall and Market Way, public toilets, signage, CCTV cameras and boosted Wi-Fi in key Council venues.
