Cornwall’s bank holiday beach warning: big tides, strong winds

Big spring tides, stronger currents and a stiff wind are lining up along the Cornish coast this bank holiday weekend, and RNLI Lifeguards Newquay want you to know before you get your feet wet.

Why this weekend’s tide is different

Big spring tides are expected across the weekend, meaning the sea will move in and out more quickly and further than usual. Water levels can shift faster than people expect, so it is worth taking extra care around rocks, harbour walls and coastal paths, anywhere the tide has room to catch you out.

Strong wind adds another layer

Strong winds are also forecast, and they can make conditions genuinely more challenging. Wind builds bigger waves and stronger currents, and it makes it harder to stay in control of inflatables and other watercraft, so anyone bringing one down to the beach should think about how manageable it will be if the wind picks up.

What to do before you get in the water

Swim between the red and yellow flags, and speak to a lifeguard if you are unsure about the conditions. If you are using a surfboard or another craft, make sure you are aware of the conditions and honest about your own ability before you paddle out. Check the tide and the weather before you set off, and do not let changing conditions catch you out.

If you get into trouble

If you find yourself in difficulty in the water, remember to Float to Live: lie on your back, keep your airway clear, control your breathing and call for help.
