Most rescues on a Cornish beach happen out of sight of everyone except the people involved. This one is about to be watched by the whole country.

The call at Watergate Bay

Two of RNLI Lifeguards Newquay‘s own, Olly Malkin and Agus Lanzavecchia, were on duty at Watergate Bay when two teenage swimmers were caught in a powerful rip current and dragged out to sea. What happened next was filmed, and it is heading to primetime.

The RNLI lifeguards’ response, and the split-second decisions that go with it, forms part of the episode. It is a rare look at what a shout like that actually involves, from the moment the alarm is raised to getting two teenagers safely back to shore.

When to watch

The episode airs on BBC Two this Tuesday 22 September at 8pm. Beyond the rescue itself, it promises a wider look at the work Olly, Agus and the rest of the Newquay team do to keep people safe on the beaches they patrol all season.

For two lifeguards used to watching the water, Tuesday night puts them on the other side of the screen for once.
