A morning of open boathouse doors, demonstrations and the odd soaking is how Sennen Cove RNLI usually spends its Lifeboat Day. This year it came with a cheque as well.

A cheque handed over on Lifeboat Day

At the station’s Lifeboat Day on Saturday 30 August, Richard Uren was on site wearing two hats. He was there as a volunteer with the RNLI’s Water Safety team, and he was also representing Penzance Canoe Club, on whose behalf he presented Sennen Cove Coxswain Nick Hichens with a cheque for £250.

The money had been raised at the West Cornwall Sea Kayak Meet, an annual event the club hosts that draws sea kayakers from right across the country.

Raised on the water, given back to it

Sennen Cove and the stretch of coast around Land’s End are among the most popular destinations in the country for sea kayaking, which is largely why the club wanted the donation to land with the local RNLI station rather than anywhere else.

“Sennen Cove and the Lands End area are very popular destinations for sea kayaks, and as a club, we are happy to be able to support the local station,” Richard said.
