RNLI Issues Urgent Safety Warning as Storm Isha Approaches Cornish Coast

Published On: 20 January 2024Last Updated: 20 January 2024By

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), a renowned lifesaving charity, has issued an urgent warning to the public about the dangers of visiting coastal areas this weekend as Storm Isha is set to batter the UK and Ireland with exceptionally strong winds. Amber and yellow weather warnings are in place, signalling potentially perilous conditions along various coastal regions.

Whilst the weather warnings for the strongest gusts of winds are from 12 noon on Sunday, the local forecasts for SE Cornwall suggest the whole weekend may be windy, with wind speeds peaking on Sunday afternoon/evening before gradually easing throughout the day on Monday.

The storm, forecasted to peak on Sunday afternoon and evening, is expected to bring wind speeds of up to 80mph, particularly affecting the west and northeast coasts of England, Wales, and parts of Northern Ireland. The severity of the winds has raised concerns over public safety, especially in exposed areas such as cliffs, seafronts, and piers.

Sam Johnson, RNLI National Water Safety Education Partner, emphasised the unpredictable and dangerous nature of the conditions. He advised those planning to visit the coast to maintain a safe distance from the water, warning that the strong gusts could easily knock someone off their feet or cause them to be swept into the sea.

The RNLI stresses the risk of cold water shock, a serious threat in waters below 15°C. Current sea temperatures are expected to be between 6 to 10°C. Individuals who find themselves unexpectedly in the water are advised to “Float to Live” by lying back, extending arms and legs, and trying to relax to gain control of their breathing.

In the event of witnessing someone in danger in the water, the public is urged to call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard. The RNLI advises against attempting a personal rescue, as this could result in further danger.

Key safety advice from the RNLI includes:

  • Staying well back from stormy seas and cliff edges.
  • Checking the weather forecast and tide times before heading out.
  • Carrying a phone for emergencies, and dialing 999 or 112 for the Coastguard in case of an emergency.

The RNLI’s warnings come in response to the severe weather conditions expected from Storm Isha and aim to prevent accidents and save lives during this tumultuous period. The public is urged to heed these warnings and prioritise safety while the storm impacts the Cornish coast.
