RNLI lifeguards are set to return to a number of popular Cornwall beaches for the upcoming October half-term, with patrols starting from Saturday, 26th October. The 2024 lifeguard season will wrap up on Sunday, 3rd November.

Adjusted Patrol Hours Due to Clock Change

As the clocks go back on 26th October, lifeguards will be patrolling during daylight hours from 10am to 5pm, offering protection and advice to beachgoers during the busy half-term period.

In Cornwall, RNLI lifeguards will be present at Widemouth, Summerleaze, Polzeath, Harlyn, Constantine, Gwithian North, Hayle, Porthtowan, Watergate Bay, Towan, Crantock, Praa Sands, Tregonhawke, Perranporth, Fistral, Sennen, and Porthmeor.

Stay Safe in Autumn Conditions

RNLI Regional Lifeguard Lead for the South West, Henry Saddler-Irvine, reminded visitors of the importance of using lifeguarded beaches. "If you're swimming and bodyboarding, do so between the red and yellow flags, and if you're unsure about anything, ask an RNLI lifeguard," said Henry.

With autumn storms bringing larger swells and faster currents due to spring tides later in the week, visitors are urged to be cautious. Henry added, "Float to live – lie flat on your back with your arms outstretched, ears submerged, and allow your body to adapt to the water," for anyone who finds themselves in trouble.

Find Your Nearest Lifeguarded Beach

The RNLI has urged beachgoers to check for lifeguarded beaches before heading out. You can find your nearest lifeguarded beach by visiting the RNLI website here.

If you're planning on heading onto the water, make sure to take a means of communication, inform others of your location, and check the conditions.

In an emergency, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
