Birdwatching Event Records Dozens of Species at Ruan Lanihorne

A small group of wildlife enthusiasts gathered for a birdwatching event at Ruan Lanihorne on the Roseland Peninsula, enjoying a successful morning surrounded by nature.

The event was organised by Connect with Nature and brought together five attendees with a shared interest in birds and wildlife.

Event organisers and leadership

The birdwatch was organised by Rowena Castillo-Nicholls, Founder and Chair of Connect with Nature. Rowena is also the RSPB Kernow Group Leader and Publicity Officer of Cornwall Birds.

The fieldtrip was led by Rob Nicholls, who guided the group through the area during the session.

Birds recorded on the day

During the event, the group recorded an impressive range of birdlife, spotting a total of 38 different species.

These included Blackbird, Black-headed Gull, Buzzard, Canada Geese, Carrion Crow, Chaffinch, Common Sandpiper, Cormorant, Curlew, Dunnock, Golden Plover, Great Black-backed Gull, Herring Gull, House Sparrow, Jackdaw, Jay, Lapwing, Little Egret, Little Grebe, Magpie, Mallard, Meadow Pipit, Mute Swan, Pheasant, Raven, Redshank, Robin, Rook, Shelduck, Snipe, Stonechat, Wigeon, Woodpigeon and Wren.

Large numbers were recorded for several species, including more than 800 Golden Plover, over 200 Canada Geese, and more than 100 each of Jackdaw, Rook and Wigeon.

A relaxed end to the morning

The birdwatching session ended on a social note, with the group enjoying tea, coffee, biscuits, bread and chocolates that Rowena had brought along.
