The day two ospreys showed up at Ruan Lanihorne

Most birdwatchers would call it a good day if a single osprey drifted over. A small group at Ruan Lanihorne, on the Roseland Peninsula, saw two.

Twelve nature and wildlife enthusiasts joined the birdwatching trip, organised by Rowena Castillo-Nicholls, founder and chair of Connect with Nature with Rowena. Rob Nicholls led the field trip. By the end of it the group had logged 37 species of birds, along with plenty of butterflies and dragonflies.

A big day for birds of prey

The raptors stole the show. As well as the two ospreys, the group picked out a few buzzards, a kestrel and a sparrowhawk, which made it a standout day for birds of prey.

Among the other birds caught on camera were a common sandpiper and a little egret.

Two young photographers in the group

Everyone on the trip was pleased to be joined by Lewis Hall and Reggie Pascoe, two young wildlife photographers and budding ornithologists.

Lewis and Reggie were pictured with Demelza Wisker, Claire Pascoe, Paul Hughs, Hayley Hall, Lesley Dent and Lennie Dent, alongside Rowena and Rob.

Butterflies, dragonflies and homemade pie

The insects put on a show as well. Photos from the day include a red admiral butterfly and a common green lacewing.

And the trip ended the way a good one should, with a chat over coffee, tea, biscuits and a delicious homemade pie.
