Where else would a banana, a beekeeper and a room full of stripy bees end up sharing a table on a quiz night? Saltash pulled exactly that off at Isambard House, where the Mayor’s Quiz sold out and turned into one of the more colourful evenings the town has seen this summer.

The theme was a single letter, chosen in honour of the man in the chair. ‘B for Brian’ gave everyone licence to raid the dressing-up box for anything beginning with B, and the crowd took it seriously.

A hall full of Bs

Bees were the obvious pick, and plenty of black-and-yellow stripes filled the room, some topped with bobbing pipe-cleaner antennae. Others went further down the alphabet of B. There were beekeepers in full white suits and veils, a banana costume that was hard to miss, and bottles of wine standing in as prizes on the night.

Isambard House, with its old Saltash station sign hanging above the crowd, was packed from the start. The event was a complete sell-out, which the council put down to the people who came along, dressed up and threw themselves into it.

£377 for Saltash Youth Network

Behind the fancy dress was a fundraiser. Saltash Town Council confirmed the Mayor raised £377 on the night for his chosen charity, Saltash Youth Network, which supports young people in the town.

The total came from a mix of quiz entries, a raffle and prizes donated for the occasion. The council thanked everyone who put money in, from the teams competing to the people who handed over prizes.

The people who made it buzz

The council described the night as buzz-worthy and said the generosity and enthusiasm in the room made all the difference. Thanks went to participants, volunteers, prize donors and everyone who took part in the raffle.

No word yet on the theme for the next one, though after bees, bananas and beekeepers the bar for costumes has been set fairly high.
