In Saltash, a heartwarming story unfolds at the local Leisure Centre, where residents Mariette Van Der Kolk, 71, and Ernie Atkinson, 83, are showcasing the transformative power of the Healthwise scheme. This physical activity programme, designed to promote health and well-being, is proving its worth by significantly improving the lives of its participants.

Mariette, who has faced a lifelong battle with scoliosis and recently underwent double hip replacement surgery, found solace and strength in the Healthwise programme following her operations. Referred by her healthcare provider to Steve Fenney, the dedicated Healthwise Facilitator at Saltash, Mariette has embraced gentle workouts tailored to her recovery needs. “It was a hesitant start,” she admits, “but learning to adjust the exercise pace to my capability has made a vast difference.” Beyond physical rehabilitation, Mariette has found a community, bonding over shared experiences with fellow participants, humorously dubbing themselves “the hipsters”.

Ernie Atkinson, a widowed, retired electrician and a lifelong walker, encountered the programme when balance issues threatened his mobility. The referral to Healthwise from his physiotherapist introduced him to a routine of gym workouts and swimming, enhancing not just his balance but his overall well-being. Ernie’s enthusiasm for the programme has been infectious, inspiring his son Matt, who suffers from back issues, to join and benefit from the scheme.

Saltash Leisure Centre, operated by GLL—a not-for-profit social enterprise—on behalf of the Cornwall council, has become a beacon of health and community. The Healthwise programme, a 12-week initiative offering personalised assessments and activity plans, stands as a testament to the power of community health initiatives. According to Steve Fenney, witnessing participants like Mariette and Ernie regain confidence and physical capability is profoundly rewarding. “Their progress is a clear indicator of the programme’s success,” he notes.

Healthwise is not just about individual success stories; it’s a collaborative effort involving local health centres and the community. The programme’s success in Saltash is partially credited to the partnership with Saltash Health Centre and the efforts of local health advocates like Valerie Taplin, who have worked tirelessly to promote the scheme.

Mariette and Ernie’s journey through Healthwise highlights the significant impact of targeted health and fitness programmes. It’s a shining example of how community-based health initiatives can foster not only physical rehabilitation but also social connection and emotional well-being. The stories of Mariette and Ernie are not just testimonials to the Healthwise programme’s efficacy; they are beacons of hope and motivation for others in the community to take a step towards healthier, more active lifestyles.
