Saltash Tunnel Technology Upgrade Testing Underway

Motorists using the A38 Saltash Tunnel are being reminded to follow existing traffic management rather than overhead signals, as testing of new technology continues.

Testing Underway Inside the Tunnel

National Highways has confirmed that testing has now begun on new overhead lane signals as part of a wider technology upgrade at the Saltash Tunnel.

During this phase, drivers may notice the signals displaying a sequence of coloured dots, including green, red and white. These are part of the testing process and are not currently in use for directing traffic.

Follow Traffic Management, Not Signals

While this work continues, the current traffic management remains in place. Road users are being advised to stay in their lane and follow the existing layout rather than the overhead signals.

A further phase of testing is planned, where the signals will begin to display standard lane control signs such as red crosses and green arrows. Drivers will again be asked to ignore these signals and continue following the traffic management in place. Advance notice will be given before this stage begins.
