Anna Gelderd MP Leads Seaton Beach Clean on 29th March

On Sunday 29th March, Anna Gelderd MP brought together dozens of volunteers for a beach clean at Seaton Beach in South East Cornwall, removing more than 10kg of waste while drawing attention to ongoing concerns about water quality.

The event took place at Seaton Beach, a designated bathing water site that has seen repeated reports of sewage pollution. Volunteers worked together to clear litter, highlighting the impact both marine waste and sewage spills are having on the area.

Community Effort Highlights Growing Concerns

The clean-up was organised in response to increasing concern from residents about the condition of local beaches. Seaton is widely used by families for swimming, walking and tourism, but current conditions reflect wider pressures affecting Cornwall’s coastline.

Anna Gelderd, Member of Parliament for South East Cornwall, said:

“Our beaches should be clean, safe, and somewhere that people can enjoy with confidence. Local residents have been raising serious concerns with me about sewage spills and litter here, and I share their concerns.

“This was a brilliant community effort and I’m glad to have brought people together. Dozens of people gave up their time on a weekend to help protect a place they care about. I will continue to hold water companies to account until we see real improvements.”

Ongoing Pressure for Change

The beach clean forms part of Anna’s wider campaign to improve water quality across South East Cornwall. The approach combines local action with continued calls for stronger oversight, transparency and investment in infrastructure.

Anna has previously challenged South West Water over its lack of transparency and poor service delivery, including directly confronting the former CEO. With a new Chief Executive taking up post this week, she has renewed her request to meet, making clear that under new leadership the company must put people before profit and deliver real improvements for coastal communities.

Further work is planned in the coming months, with a continued focus on addressing the impact of failing systems on coastal areas.
