Cornish Pirates to Host Harlequins at Mennaye Field on Saturday

Harlequins Return to Mennaye After 74 Years

Rugby supporters in Penzance are set for a rare occasion this Saturday when the Cornish Pirates welcome Premiership side Harlequins to the Mennaye Field.

With no league game scheduled, the Pirates will host the London club in a special fixture that will see the two sides compete for the first time for the Tribute Cup. Kick off is at 2.30pm.

The match also marks Harlequins’ first visit to the Mennaye Field since February 1952. The club are currently on a four day training camp in Cornwall, with Saturday’s game forming part of their preparations.

Pirates Name Squad for Big Occasion

Cornish Pirates will be captained by Alex Everett, with the club selecting a slightly larger squad for the match.

John Stevens returns after a long injury lay off and is named among the replacements. Scrum half Will Becconsall is also included on the bench, having previously made five appearances for the Pirates while linked with Exeter Chiefs.

Two young backs have also been named among the replacements. Noah Clifford from Redruth and Finn Love from Camborne will both be keen to see action.

Harlequins Bring Strong Squad to Cornwall

Harlequins have selected a strong travelling squad for the trip to Penzance.

Among those included are several international capped players. Alex Dombrandt and Luke Northmore have represented England, while Pedro Delgado, Guido Petti Pagadizabal, Boris Wenger and Rodrigo Isgro have been capped by Argentina. Kieran Treadwell has represented Ireland.

Speaking ahead of the match, Cornish Pirates joint head coach Gavin Cattle said the game would be a valuable opportunity for the squad.

“The fixture will provide a great opportunity for us to get quality game time for the lads, and it will be a great occasion for the club to have such a calibre of team visiting the Mennaye.

“Barring one or two players on international duty, Quins have selected a strong group, including several big names, so we’ll want our supporters to fill the ground, get behind our team, and create that special Cornish and Mennaye Field atmosphere.”

Saturday’s match will be refereed by Andy Wigley, assisted by Jack Sutton and Kevin Williams. Paul Box will act as the fourth official.
