The Cornish Pirates have secured a promising addition to their squad with the signing of 22-year-old Irish prop Oisin Michel. This news follows the recent announcement of former Ireland under 20s prop James French joining the team. The Pirates are reinforcing their forward pack with fresh, young talent from Ireland.

Rugby Journey from Kildare to Cornwall

Oisin Michel, born in Kildare, began his rugby journey at the age of 13 with Cill Dara RFC. His early education at Patrician Brothers Secondary in Newbridge laid the foundation for his rugby career, leading to his inclusion in the Leinster Sub Academy. His skills and dedication earned him a spot in the Ireland under 20s squad in 2022, where he played a key role in achieving a Six Nations Grand Slam.

International Experience and Overcoming Challenges

Following his success with the Ireland under 20s, Oisin joined the Connacht Academy. However, his journey was not without challenges, as injuries briefly hindered his progress. Demonstrating resilience, Oisin moved to Australia to play for the West Harbour Pirates, where he regained his full fitness and showcased his potential.

Coach Joe Walsh’s Confidence in Oisin

Cornish Pirates’ coach Joe Walsh expressed his enthusiasm for the latest signing. “Oisin is a very good young player who has a lot of potential to perform at the top level,” Joe commented. He noted Oisin’s impressive performances with the Ireland under 20s and in Academy rugby, praising his hard work and dedication.

“Injuries have proved a little frustrating, but after taking the opportunity to play in Australia, and back to full fitness, from what we have seen we have been really pleased both by the way he has applied himself and how he has played,” Joe added. “Working hard, Oisin has got himself into good shape and, as a young man with plenty of growth and potential, we feel he will prove a really good fit for the Cornish Pirates.”
