Pirates Hit Top Spot
By Phil Westren
Tavistock 0 – Pirates Amateurs 62
Maintaining their good form, this emphatic 10-try win for the Pirates Amateurs takes them to top spot in the Counties 1 Tribute Western West league.
31 points per half were scored, with centre Josh Semmens opening the account with a try in the fourth minute. Full-back Ben Wragg added the conversion, as he did to two tries that he himself next scored. During remaining time in the first forty, man of the match flanker Sam Carroll crossed the line twice.
Into the second half, the general pattern followed the first, with Wragg converting the first three tries scored by skipper Stan Somers, replacement Rhodri McAtee, and Semmens again, who at the very end proceeded to grab a hat-trick. In between, hooker Eli Williams also got on the scoresheet.
The ’Ams’, who are next in action at home to Bideford on Saturday (ko 2.30pm), are now a single point ahead of second placed Paignton and three ahead of third placed Barnstaple II.
Speaking after the game against Tavistock, head coach Murray Westren said:
“Credit to the lads for securing such a result. However, we know some tougher games lie ahead, including a Cornwall Cup semi-final away against higher league placed Wadebridge Camels on the 22nd February.
“As for the league, our programme will come to an end at the start of April, so it is important that we stay focused, and continue to train hard, with the whole squad providing important input right to the very end.”
