Illegal E Motorbike Seized in St Austell Police Operation

A police operation targeting nuisance motorcyclists has led to the seizure of an electric motorbike in the St Austell area.

Operation in Penwithick and Carluddon

On Thursday 19th March, the Neighbourhood Team carried out an operation using both uniformed officers and plain clothes resources in Penwithick and Carluddon. The focus was on tackling nuisance motorcyclists.

During the operation, officers stopped a rider using a Surron branded electric motorbike on a public footpath. The bike was seized under powers available to police under Section 165A of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

Safety Concerns Raised

Police highlighted that these types of electric motorbikes are capable of rapid acceleration and can reach speeds of up to 60 mph. They say this poses a real risk of serious injury and harm to other road users and pedestrians.

Legal Requirements for Riders

These motorbikes are classed as motor vehicles under the Road Traffic Act. This means they must be registered with the DVLA, insured and have a valid MOT to be used on a road or in a public place.

Riders are also required to hold a valid UK driving licence.

More Operations Planned

The Neighbourhood Team has confirmed that further operations will be carried out in the future.
