Tucking yourself in against the cliff can feel like the best seat on a busy beach. Sheltered from the wind, a bit of shade, a quiet corner of your own. A callout near St Austell on the 25th is a reminder of why it can be the riskiest spot you could pick.

A cliff fall at Duporth beach

St Austell Coastguard was tasked to a cliff fall at Duporth beach on the 25th. People were underneath the cliff as part of it came away. They managed to get out of the way in time, and the team called it a lucky escape.

A busy two days for the team

The Duporth callout came at the end of a busy spell. On Wednesday the team was tasked to Pentewan Sands to help the ambulance service with a medical event. They were joined there by Mevagissey Coastguard and Cornwall Air Ambulance.

Why you should never sit at the base of a cliff

The message from St Austell Coastguard after the Duporth fall is a simple one. Do not sit at the base of cliffs, because debris can fall without warning.

The team also reminded people to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard for any coastal emergency.
