MP Welcomes Planned Upgrades at St Austell Community Hospital

Noah Law has welcomed new plans to expand services at St Austell Community Hospital, with upgrades aimed at improving patient care and easing pressure on Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske).

Expansion Plans Announced

The hospital is set to see an expansion of its Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) Centre. The improvements will include:

• Five SDEC recliner bays
• Five urgent treatment bays
• A designated ambulance drop-off entrance
• A direct pedestrian route to the main entrance

These additions are designed to improve how patients are assessed and treated on the same day, without the need for hospital admission.

Building on Recent Upgrades

The latest announcement follows refurbishment works carried out between 2024 and 2025 at St Austell Community Hospital. These works included:

• A significant upgrade to the Minor Injury Unit
• Replacement of X-ray equipment

These earlier improvements were completed in preparation for the newly announced expansion.

Easing Pressure on Treliske

The upgrades are expected to allow St Austell Community Hospital to take on some acute cases that would otherwise go to Treliske. This could help reduce pressure on the busy A&E department there.

The plans form part of a wider announcement by Wes Streeting, targeting hospitals with high demand and aiming to reduce corridor care through tailored support.

Whilst the expansion of the site is finally under way after action from our Labour Government, the ability to receive care closer to home will be welcome news to my constituents in St Austell, and free up much-needed capacity at Treliske too.”
