New Murals Transform Waiting Area at St Austell MIU

St Austell Community Hospital’s Minor Injury Unit (MIU) has received a significant upgrade, with new facilities and colourful murals designed to improve the experience for patients and visitors.

The updated unit now features a larger waiting area, two bays capable of holding four beds at a time, and three new treatment rooms. Alongside these changes, three new murals have been installed, bringing scenes inspired by the local area and nature into the clinical space.

The artwork was made possible thanks to the long-standing support of the St Austell Community Hospital League of Friends.

A thank you to the League of Friends

David Tregonning, team lead for the MIU and outpatient department, said the murals were created as a way to recognise the group’s long history of supporting the hospital.

David Tregonning explained:

“As the League of Friends reaches the end of its long service, we wanted to create something that recognises their outstanding contribution to the hospital and the community. These murals will stay in place for many years. They will act as a clear reminder of the group’s dedication. This project is a heartfelt thank you for everything they have done.”

Artwork designed to brighten clinical spaces

The murals were created by Donna Ayres from Paint the Wall Murals, who has previously worked on artwork at Falmouth and Newquay Community Hospitals.

David said he specifically wanted Donna’s style to be part of the project.

“Donna has worked at other Trust sites. I wanted her to bring her style to St Austell because her work can brighten clinical spaces and support patient wellbeing.”

Three themes inspired by Cornwall

Each mural features a different theme. One highlights the town of St Austell, including landmarks such as the Eden Project and Charlestown harbour. Another focuses on a seaside scene, while the third depicts a woodland setting.

The hospital team hopes the artwork will help reduce anxiety, provide a distraction for younger patients, and create a calmer environment during treatment.

David added that further improvements could follow in the future.

“I am excited to keep improving the experience for both adults and children at the hospital. As more development takes place, I would love to add even more mural areas. This would help make the unit feel more welcoming, calming, and positive for everyone who comes here.

“This project reflects the compassion, care, and community spirit that define our hospital.”
