Police warn against trespassing at St Dennis quarry site

Police in St Austell have warned people to stay away from a quarry near St Dennis after reports that trespassers, some of them children, have been putting themselves in serious danger.

The warning

The St Austell Neighbourhood Team said it has seen a rise in reports from Cornish Lithium of people getting onto the site of the former Trelavour Downs clay pit. Some have caused damage to property. Others have been abusive and threatening towards staff when challenged.

Why the site is dangerous

The team said the risks on the site are real. There are insecure areas of open water and sheer drops, and staff have watched people put themselves in danger of falling from height or into deep cold water. Some of those seen doing so have been children.

Trespassing also puts staff and emergency services at risk, police added, as they could be the ones called out to help if someone gets into trouble.

The message from officers was simple. “Please do not trespass on the site.”
