St Austell Leisure Centre gym to grow where hydrotherapy pool stood

The space where St Austell Leisure Centre’s hydrotherapy pool once stood is being turned into something else.

The pool has been demolished. In its place, a bigger gym is taking shape.

What is being built

A significant expansion of the centre’s health and wellbeing facilities is well under way.

GLL, which runs the centre, says the development comes in response to increased demand for memberships and for exercise on referral.

The current range of equipment will be improved, and a third more fitness stations will be installed.

Who runs the centre

GLL is a not-for-profit social enterprise that operates under the Better brand. It runs St Austell and eight other leisure centres in Cornwall on behalf of Cornwall Council.

What GLL says

James Curry, GLL Head of Service for Cornwall, said: “I’m delighted that we have been able to agree an investment that ensures St Austell Leisure Centre’s gym offer continues to meet the growing needs of the wider St Austell community.

“It’s widely accepted that being more active is important for an individual’s health and wellbeing and this investment ensures we can give existing users what they need, whilst also accommodating more people with complex health needs.”

Not the first time the gym has grown

GLL doubled the centre’s gym space and added a new dance studio in 2018. Further improvements to the fitness equipment and the functional fitness area followed in 2024.

More details are on the St Austell Leisure Centre facilities page.

Work on the new facility is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
