St Austell Man Banned From Drinking Alcohol in Public

Stopping traffic in the middle of Charlestown Road turned out to be a costly move for one St Austell man, who now faces two years of strict rules on where he can drink, walk, and travel.

What the court decided

James Thornton, 42, has been made the subject of a criminal behaviour order (CBO) following concerns about his alcohol fuelled antisocial behaviour. On 17th April, James pleaded guilty to being drunk in a highway after obstructing vehicles on Charlestown Road in St Austell on 31st March 2026.

The conditions of the order

The two-year CBO prohibits James from:

• Consuming alcohol in a public space, including being in possession of an open vessel containing alcohol
• Being in a state of intoxication in any public space
• Entering any road where motorised vehicles have access, unless to cross the road, and from loitering on roads whilst crossing them
• Travelling on any rail service without a valid ticket. He must present a ticket to staff when requested
• Acting in a manner that causes, or is likely to cause, anyone to feel in fear of their safety

Breaching any condition of the CBO is a criminal offence and can result in a custodial sentence.

James is due to appear in court again on 4th August for sentencing on four counts of public order offences that took place on 31st March.

St Austell Police said they will continue to work alongside the community and partner organisations to ensure James complies with the conditions of the order. Anyone wishing to report a breach of the CBO is asked to call 999.
