Thirty-eight calls. Eleven days. Police, ambulance and Coastguard on the other end of the line, and not one of them, it is alleged, an emergency.

A man from St Austell has appeared before magistrates accused of breaching a court order that bans him from calling 999 for non-emergency reasons.

What the order says

The man, who has not been named, is subject to a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) issued by Cornwall Magistrates’ Court earlier this year.

According to St Austell Police, the order was put in place to prevent and deter offending. It came with strict conditions, and one of them restricts him from calling 999 when there is no emergency.

38 calls in October

Police say that over 11 days in October the man was identified as allegedly calling 999 on 38 occasions for non-emergency reasons. Those calls are said to have gone to the police, the ambulance service and the Coastguard.

The St Austell neighbourhood team arrested and charged him with breaching the CBO, and remanded him to appear at Cornwall Magistrates’ Court on Monday (2 November).

Back in court in December

He was bailed by the court and is due back for a further hearing on Friday 4 December. The case has not yet concluded.

Police say they will share the court results once they receive them.
