St Austell man James Thornton remanded to prison before sentencing

A St Austell man who was let out on bail and told to stay out of trouble is now behind bars, after police say he kept offending in the very town his court order was meant to protect.

What happened at court

James Thornton appeared at Cornwall Magistrates Court on Tuesday 28 July, according to St Austell Police, following his arrest and charge over an incident on 27 July. He is alleged to have breached a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) and to have been in possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

The court decided to remand James to prison, where he will now wait for a sentencing hearing due in early August.

How he got here

The story goes back to 4 April 2026, when Thornton was first arrested, charged and remanded over a number of public order offences committed in St Austell. The court released him on bail ahead of that sentencing hearing, and placed him under a CBO. The order carried strict conditions designed to stop him reoffending.

Police say that did not hold. In their account, James continued to offend and breached the conditions of his CBO, which is what brought him back before magistrates and led to the decision to remand him.

St Austell Police say they will share the court result once they receive it.
