There is a stretch of road in St Austell where the rubbish keeps coming back no matter how often it is cleared. On Saturday morning, in pouring rain, eight people decided to take it on anyway.

A wet start on Menacuddle hill
Eight members of St Austell Tidy Up Team turned out at 9am on Saturday 6th June to clean up the Menacuddle hill area of the town. They worked through heavy rain to clear a spot that has become a regular collection point for other people’s litter.
The hill is a known route for discarded takeaway wrappers and containers. People buy food in town, drive up the hill and park in the lay-bys to eat it. The packaging then gets thrown from car windows and ends up scattered along the road.
The team has questioned why this keeps happening when the simple alternative is right there. Households across Cornwall already have free collection from home, and everyone dropping the rubbish is sitting in a car, so the packaging could easily be taken home and put in the bin.
A warm welcome from Jake’s Bakes
There was a bright spot at the end of the cold, wet morning. Jake of Jake’s Bakes Cornwall took the volunteers into his cafe in the Market House and warmed them up with toasties and hot drinks, all on the house.
