What’s Hiding Beneath the Gorse? Shocking Find at St Austell Car Park During Litter Pick
Over a dozen sacks of rubbish collected during Great British Spring Clean event
Ten volunteers joined St Austell Tidy Up Team yesterday for their latest organised litter pick as part of Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean, tackling areas around the town and collecting well over a dozen sacks of rubbish.
The group also came across larger fly-tipped items, including builder waste, which they’ve reported.
Unreachable rubbish under the gorse
Volunteers turned their attention to a car park where the old road once ran, but encountered a frustrating challenge. Large amounts of cans and other litter were spotted under thick gorse bushes, making it nearly impossible to access without cutting the vegetation back.
Despite three volunteers removing four sacks from the area, it’s believed that more than double that amount still remains trapped under the dense growth.
“How does it get there?” the group asked in their Facebook post, pointing out the sheer volume of cans left behind. “There must be some very heavy drinkers around!”
Support from the community
The group also gave thanks to everyone who took part, and to Biffa for supplying new litter pickers, sourced with the help of Cllr James Mustoe.
St Austell Tidy Up Team continues to organise regular clean-ups to tackle litter and raise awareness of the ongoing problem.
