Consols Junction Redesign in St Ives Set to Begin: What Drivers Need to Know
Work to re-design the busy Consols junction on the B3306 in St Ives is set to begin on Monday, 6th January. The project, aimed at reducing travel times and improving pedestrian safety, forms part of the St Ives Low Carbon Transport Strategy and is being delivered by Cornwall Council in partnership with the St Ives Town Deal Board.
Changes to Junction Layout and Traffic Flow
The redesign will alter the junction’s priority, giving precedence to traffic between St Ives and Halsetown rather than the St Ives to Zennor route. A priority give-way system will be introduced, ensuring vehicles leaving St Ives have priority over incoming traffic.
Enhanced Pedestrian Access
Following public consultation at St Ives Library in September 2024, the original design was revised to include a pedestrian footway at the narrow pinch point past Tom’s Yard, along with additional pavements around the junction to improve safety.
Construction Details
Cormac, the contractor responsible for the project, will implement three-way traffic lights throughout most of the work to ensure safety for the team on-site.
“This is a busy area and, while we understand the importance of keeping the traffic flowing as well as possible at all times during the construction, we also need to ensure the safety of the teams working on site,” said a Cormac spokesperson.
To minimise disruption, final resurfacing and new road markings will be carried out at night towards the end of the project, as this will require a full road closure.
Completion Timeline
The works are expected to be completed by the end of March 2025. Residents or motorists with concerns can contact Cormac by calling 0300 1234 222 or emailing contracting@cormacltd.co.uk.
This project is part of a broader plan to create a sustainable, accessible network of walking, cycling, and urban spaces in St Ives. Cornwall Council, as the Lead Authority for Town Deals in the county, administers the fund on behalf of the St Ives Town Deal Board.
