Lizard RNLI crew pass winch and navigation training

Behind every shout off the most southerly point in the country sits a long list of qualifications, and two Lizard RNLI crew members have just added their names to it. Both passed assessments that take months of work to reach, and both did it under the eye of a trainer who has done the job for real.

A pass out on the winch

Crew member Norbert Varga has qualified as a Plant (winch) operator after successfully completing his pass out. He was assessed by Plant and Machinery Trainer Gary Stansbury, who kept a close watch as Norbert worked through the checks.

The winch is the machinery that hauls the lifeboat back up the slipway and handles it on station, so the operator role is one the whole crew relies on when a boat comes home.

Navigation signed off

There was a second success to mark at the same station. Crew member Alfred Amiss passed his navigation course, assessed by Coastal Lifeboat Trainer Ollie George.

Alfred is pictured on the right, shaking hands with Ollie after the result came through.

Both passes are the kind of milestone that rarely makes headlines but keeps a lifeboat station running. Congratulations to Norbert and Alfred from everyone who knows what those assessments take.
