Torpoint school merger approved, but the old site’s future is open

Two of Torpoint’s schools are set to become one. Cornwall Council has approved plans to bring Torpoint Nursery and Infant School together with Carbeile Junior School, creating a single all-through primary school for the town. The decision, made on 15 July 2026, comes with conditions attached, and it leaves one big question hanging over the community: what happens next to the historic Torpoint Nursery and Infant School buildings.

What has been approved

The council has backed the amalgamation of the two schools into one all-through primary, subject to planning permission. That permission covers a new entrance and additional car parking, and the approval does not take full effect until it is granted.

Cllr Rob Parsonage described the move as a milestone for the town. “This is one of the most significant decisions affecting our community in recent years,” he said. “Torpoint Nursery and Infant School has served generations of local families and is deeply embedded within the community.”

A stakeholder process on the buildings’ future

Rather than treat the vote as a full stop, Cllr Parsonage framed it as a starting point. “This is not the end of the journey; it is the beginning of a new era, one that will be defined by the people of Torpoint,” he said.

He committed to leading a stakeholder engagement process to gather local views on how the historic buildings might be used for future generations, adding that he would be looking to residents for their support.

The conditions attached

Approval rests on planning permission for the new entrance and extra parking at the Carbeile site. Cllr Parsonage said he would work with Cornwall Planning, school leaders, the Carbeile Board of Governors and parents to address concerns as they arise.

He set out the priorities for the transition:

• children’s education remains paramount;
• staff are treated fairly and supported through any changes;
• traffic, parking and pedestrian safety around the Carbeile site are fully addressed before implementation;
• the future of the Torpoint Nursery and Infant School site is determined transparently; and
• residents are kept fully informed as plans develop.

What comes next

Cllr Parsonage said he would keep a close eye on how the plans are carried out. “Torpoint deserves high quality education and genuine long term investment. I will scrutinise every stage of implementation to ensure the commitments made today are delivered.”
