Tamar Bridge TamarTag: online applications pausing from Thursday

If you’ve been meaning to get a TamarTag and kept putting it off, this week is the moment to act. From Thursday 6 August, online applications will be temporarily suspended, and even if you apply by another method right away, a new tag could take up to four weeks to reach you.

Why the online form is closing

Tamar Crossings says demand for new TamarTags is running at an unusually high level at the same time as its tag manufacturer is struggling to source one of the electronic components used to produce them. The result is a limited supply of tags and a queue that is only getting longer.

To manage what stock remains as fairly as possible, the organisation is pausing its online application form from this Thursday. Applications submitted that way cannot easily be logged in arrival order, so the online route is being closed while new deliveries are awaited.

How to still apply

Paper and in-person routes remain open. Applications submitted by email, post or in person will be registered in the order they are received, with tags allocated as new stock arrives.

The next delivery of new tags is expected towards the end of September, but given current demand, anyone applying now should expect to wait up to four weeks from submitting an application to receiving their tag.

If your existing TamarTag develops a fault

Existing TamarTag holders do not need to go through the new application process. If a tag develops a fault or needs replacing, the Customer Services team can be reached by email or by calling 01752 361577. Tamar Crossings says existing customers should keep using their current tag while they wait for a replacement, and their account will continue to receive the discounted toll rate throughout.

The local MP responds

Anna Gelderd, Member of Parliament for South East Cornwall, said the pause would add to frustration among people who depend on the crossings daily.

“Many local people and businesses here in South East Cornwall rely on the Tamar crossings every day to get to work and school, attend hospital appointments, see family, and keep their businesses running, so pausing online Tamar Tag applications is only going to add to local frustration,” Anna said.

“I appreciate that Tamar Crossings is dealing with exceptionally high demand and wider supply challenges, but this situation again highlights the need for a resilient, modern system that is fit for purpose and works for our communities. I look forward to seeing applications reopened as soon as possible.”
