Admin Fee Increase for Tamar Tag to Be Discussed at January Meeting

Published On: 16 December 2025Last Updated: 16 December 2025By

A proposed increase in administration charges for people using the Tamar Tag system to cross the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry is set to be discussed at an extraordinary committee meeting in the New Year.

The increase, which forms part of the Business Plan for Tamar Crossings, will be debated by the Tamar Bridge & Torpoint Ferry Joint Committee when it meets at Plymouth City Council. The meeting has been provisionally set for 12 January and will be open to both the public and media.

Extra scrutiny before any decision

The joint committee is co-chaired by Councillor Andrew Long of Cornwall Council and Councillor Anne Freeman of Plymouth City Council. Speaking on behalf of the committee, they said:

“We have been concerned that this recommendation requires more scrutiny and have been working hard with officers and members since the meeting on 5th December to ensure this happens prior to any scrutiny and voting by both authorities.

Any recommendation will then feed into the budget setting process from both Cornwall Council and Plymouth City Council prior to the budgets going to each authority in February.”

Any outcome from the meeting would feed into the wider budget setting process for both councils ahead of February.

How to attend the meeting

The exact date and attendance details will be confirmed as soon as possible. Information on how to attend public council meetings is available in the Get Involved section of the Plymouth City Council website, which can be found here.

Further details will also be published on both the Plymouth City Council and Cornwall Council websites.

Why the crossings matter

The Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Joint Committee is made up of five councillors from each of the two joint authorities. The partnership dates back to 1950, when Plymouth City Council and Cornwall Council worked together to construct the Tamar Bridge and jointly take control of the Torpoint Ferry.

Both crossings remain critical parts of the region’s transport network, supporting the economic wellbeing of Plymouth and South East Cornwall.
