Tamar Bridge Committee Reverses Planned TamarTag Fee Increase
The Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Joint Committee has reversed a proposed increase to the TamarTag administration fee following public backlash and pressure from local MPs.
The committee had planned to raise the monthly admin charge from £0.80 to £2.00, but confirmed today, Monday 12th January 2026, that the fee will remain at £0.80.
MPs Apply Pressure After Public Backlash
The change follows intervention from Anna Gelderd, Luke Pollard and Fred Thomas, who wrote to the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Joint Committee in December.
In their letter, the MPs urged the committee to reconsider the proposal and to ensure that any future changes were justified, properly consulted on, clearly communicated and mindful of the impact on local communities.
The TamarTag is seen by the MPs as a key part of delivering cheaper tolls for people who regularly cross the Tamar.
Anna Gelderd: Residents Rely on the Crossing
Anna Gelderd, Member of Parliament for South East Cornwall, said residents depend on the crossing for school, work, healthcare appointments and to see family and friends. She said no one should be denied access to services because of rising toll charges.
Anna said she was pleased that public pressure and action from MPs had resulted in the committee keeping the admin charge at £0.80. She described the planned consultation as a positive step towards transparency and said she would continue to push for the needs of people in South East Cornwall to be fully considered.
Call for Cheaper Tolls Continues
Luke Pollard, MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, said he was glad the committee had recognised its initial decision was wrong. He said a full implementation plan is now needed to deliver cheaper tolls for local people and confirmed that local MPs remain committed to working with the committee.
Fred Thomas, MP for Plymouth Moor View, also welcomed the reversal. He said increasing the cost of the TamarTag would not have delivered cheaper tolls and said he wants to work with neighbouring MPs and the committee to achieve that goal.
Consultation Planned
The committee will now launch a consultation to fully consider the impact of any future admin fee changes on local people. The MPs have said they will continue to push for cheaper tolls and for any future changes to be handled as openly and transparently as possible.
