First Kernow Wins Truro Park & Ride Contract for Three More Years
First Kernow has secured a three-year contract to continue operating the Truro Park & Ride service for Cornwall Council. The company, which has run the service for the past nine years, won the tender to provide transport from the two Park & Ride sites at Langarth Park on the west of Truro and Tregurra Park on the east.
Continued Service and Stable Prices
The new contract ensures that First Kernow will continue to offer regular bus services, with routes running every ten minutes during peak times. These buses will serve key locations in Truro, including the city centre, hospital, and museum. Ticket prices will remain unchanged, with options available from as little as £1.64 per day, providing affordable travel for commuters and visitors alike.
Supporting Sustainable Travel
Truro’s Park & Ride carries over 850,000 passengers each year, playing a crucial role in reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality in the city. The service aligns with Cornwall Council’s objectives to promote greener and more sustainable transport options. As part of these efforts, seven electric buses funded through the Zebra 2 scheme are set to be introduced in 2025, replacing the current diesel fleet.
Community Engagement and Employment Opportunities
First Kernow has also committed to working closely with the community and supporting local projects, such as those at Tregurra Fields. The operator will engage with local schools and colleges to promote the use of the Park & Ride service. Additionally, the contract will provide 15 Real Living Wage job opportunities for local drivers, alongside apprenticeship placements to support career development in the area.
Simon Goff, Managing Director at First Kernow, highlighted the company’s dedication to maintaining a strong partnership with Cornwall Council and the local community. Goff stated, “We’re so proud to continue our longstanding partnership with Cornwall Council to deliver the Park & Ride service. The service is a brilliant solution for passengers, allowing people to enjoy Truro in a stress-free way.”
First Kernow’s continued involvement in the Truro Park & Ride scheme underscores its commitment to providing efficient and eco-friendly public transport solutions for Cornwall’s residents and visitors.
