Mayor of Truro’s August, from Community Day to VJ Day

Cllr Chris Wells has had one of those months where the diary swings from music and dancing at a community celebration to a solemn pause for the 14 people Truro lost in a single night of the Second World War. In his monthly update, shared by Truro City Council, the Mayor runs through four weeks that also took in a youth theatre production, a second remembrance date, a new set of keys and a trip up the road to Lostwithiel.

A “memorable event” at the Filipino-Cornwall Community Day

Being invited to the Filipino-Cornwall Community Day was a highlight of his previous mayoral year, Chris said, so he and his Mayoress were delighted to be asked back for a second year running. The pair were entertained by music and dancing before meeting the stallholders, who were selling everything from food to arts, crafts and other goods. It was, he said, “a memorable event, showcasing the vibrancy and talent that the Filipino community brings to Cornwall.”

Boom Theatre’s young stars take on Cats

The Mayor and Mayoress also went along to Cats: A Cornish Re-imagining, a production from Boom Theatre that featured musical and athletic performances from its young cast.

Remembering the 1942 bombing of Truro, and marking VJ Day

August also carried two moments of remembrance. The first looked back at the bombing of Truro in 1942, with particular thought for the 14 people who lost their lives that night. The second fell on 15 August, when the city marked VJ Day and the end of the Second World War.

Bloom judges, a new set of keys, and a trip to Lostwithiel

The Mayor also hosted the South West and Britain in Bloom judges, showing them a video of the work that goes into keeping Truro looking its best. On 27 August he was handed the keys to the new Boscawen Park Pavilion, and he travelled to Lostwithiel for its own Mayor Making Ceremony.

“It has been another busy and rewarding month, with many opportunities to celebrate our communities, remember our history and recognise the wonderful work being carried out across Truro and further afield,” said Cllr Chris Wells, Mayor of Truro.
