New pedestrian crossings planned for two roads into Truro

Two of the main roads leading into Truro are in line for a rethink, and there’s only a matter of days left to weigh in.

Cornwall Council is consulting on plans to add controlled pedestrian crossings at two existing signalised junctions on the edge of Truro: the A390 Tregolls Road/Chellew Road junction, and the A39 Newquay Road junction. Truro City Council has been sharing the consultation on its Facebook page, flagging that any comments left there won’t count as an official response, and that people need to use Cornwall Council’s own survey pages instead.

The Chellew Road proposal

At the junction of Tregolls Road, Trevithick Road and Chellew Road, near Beachwood Park, the plan is for a new pedestrian crossing with tactile paving and push-button control. To make room for it, the existing right-turn lane would be removed and turned into a grass verge, alongside resurfacing works and new road markings. An existing traffic camera at the junction is also shown on the plan.

The Newquay Road proposal

A short distance away, at the signalised junction on Newquay Road near the Truro Park and Ride roundabout, the second proposal would add a new pedestrian crossing within the junction itself, again with tactile paving and push-button control, plus new corduroy tactile paving leading up to it. The existing footway would be extended to reach the new crossing point, and the existing dropped kerbs would stay in place for cycle access. The existing pedestrian refuge in the middle of the road would be removed and the carriageway reinstated, high friction surfacing would be renewed, and a separate set of dropped kerbs nearby would be replaced with full height kerbs.

It’s worth remembering the two authorities are separate. Truro City Council is the town-level council, while Cornwall Council, the body actually running this consultation, covers services across the whole of the county.
