New pedestrian crossings proposed for two Truro junctions

Anyone who has stood waiting for a gap in the traffic on Tregolls Road or Newquay Road may soon have an easier time getting across. Cornwall Council is asking what people think of plans to put controlled pedestrian crossings into two of Truro’s busiest signalised junctions, and one of the two schemes would also take out an existing right-turn lane.

What is being proposed

The work is being run by Cornwall Council through its highways company Cormac, and covers two separate sites. One is the A390 Tregolls Road and Chellew Road junction, the other is the A39 Newquay Road junction. Both would get Puffin crossings, the type that reads when people are still on the crossing and holds the traffic until they are clear, along with tactile paving and push-button control.

Each site has its own reference number and its own consultation, so people can comment on one or both.

Newquay Road (Infra25-457)

At the Newquay Road junction, close to the Truro Park and Ride, the plan is to add a new pedestrian crossing within the existing signalised junction, with tactile paving and a push-button control. The existing footway would be extended to reach the new crossing point, and new corduroy tactile paving would be laid.

The existing pedestrian refuge would be removed and the carriageway reinstated, while the existing dropped kerbs would stay in place for cycle access. High friction surfacing at the junction would be renewed as part of the work.

Tregolls Road and Chellew Road (Infra25-291)

The second scheme sits on the A390 near Trevithick Road and Beechwood Parc. It would bring in a new pedestrian crossing with tactile paving and push-button control, together with new footway construction.

The bigger change here is on the road itself. The right-turn lane would be removed and replaced with a grass verge. The existing traffic camera would remain.

The consultation was shared locally by Truro City Council, which points out that it is a separate authority from Cornwall Council, the larger body responsible for county-wide services and for the roads in question.
