Step Into Cornwall’s Past: St Just-in-Roseland’s New Interpretive Centre Opens
A brand-new Interpretive Centre has opened at St Just-in-Roseland Church and gardens, welcoming visitors to explore the deep-rooted history, heritage, and breathtaking scenery of one of Cornwall’s most beautiful locations. The centre officially opened on Saturday 15th February 2025, just in time for the half-term break.
A Historic Haven
Renowned poet laureate John Betjeman once described St Just-in-Roseland Church as “for some the most beautiful churchyard on earth.” Now, visitors can delve deeper into its history, from its Celtic Christian heritage to its role in the Age of Saints. Often referred to as a “thin place”, where the boundary between earth and the spiritual world feels almost transparent, this peaceful haven offers a unique blend of history and nature.
The centre features interactive exhibits designed to engage visitors of all ages, making it a perfect stop for families, history enthusiasts, and nature lovers alike.
What’s Inside?
The new centre brings centuries of history to life, offering a range of fascinating displays:
- Discover heritage dating back to 550AD – uncover the church’s ancient past.
- Meet the entrepreneurial horticulturalists who shaped the lush tropical gardens.
- Follow a timeline of Cornish history and understand its place in the wider world.
- Learn to speak Cornish, with engaging activities to introduce the language.
- Explore the biodiversity of the churchyard, from rare plants to local birdlife.
- Join a night safari and experience the natural world in an entirely new way.
Open to All – Including Four-Legged Friends!
The Interpretive Centre is open daily from 10:00am – 4:00pm in winter and 10:00am – 5:00pm in summer. Entry is completely free, though donations are greatly appreciated to help maintain the site. Dogs are also welcome, making it a truly inclusive experience for all.
Indulge at Renwicks Café
The nearby Renwicks Café has also undergone an expansion, offering more space for Phoebe and her team to serve up freshly cooked meals and delicious homemade cakes. Whether you’re after a hearty lunch or a sweet treat, it’s the perfect spot to relax before or after your visit.
Scenic Walks and Breathtaking Views
Once you’ve explored the Interpretive Centre, church, and gardens, there’s even more to see. Visitors can take in the beauty of the Roseland Peninsula with a choice of walking routes:
- Walk to St Mawes – discover its famous castle and stunning coastal views.
- Follow the creek-side path to Messack Woods, home to ancient trees and a sea of bluebells in late spring.
With its rich history, spectacular surroundings, and family-friendly attractions, St Just-in-Roseland Church and gardens now offer even more reasons to visit. Whether you come for the history, the scenery, or just a slice of cake, it’s a perfect day out in Cornwall.
