Truro Driver Fined £1,016 for 50mph in 30mph Roadworks Zone

Doing 50mph through a 30mph roadworks zone might feel like a minor slip. For one Cornwall driver, it has just turned into a four-figure court bill and six points on the licence.

What happened

Daniel Bassett was caught driving an Isuzu pick-up at 50mph in a temporary 30mph roadworks limit at Threemilestone on 6th June 2025.

The case was heard at Truro Magistrates’ Court on 6th May. Daniel pleaded not guilty but was convicted.

The cost

The court endorsed his licence with six penalty points and handed down a £440 fine. On top of that, he was ordered to pay £400 in costs and a £176 victim surcharge, taking the total to £1,016.

The victim surcharge is a mandatory financial penalty added to fines in England and Wales. It funds services such as rape support centres and witness services rather than going to a specific victim of the offence. It applies regardless of whether the offence was committed against an individual.

Why the limit was in force

Roadworks speed limits are legally enforceable when a temporary traffic regulation order (TTRO) is in place. Devon & Cornwall Police’s Road Safety Team says they are there to protect both motorists and roadworkers.

One detail worth flagging from the case. A 50mph repeater sign was visible on the opposite side of the dual carriageway. That side had not been reduced, so the 50mph limit remained in force for traffic heading the other way. Repeater signs on the affected carriageway had been obscured or removed.

Devon & Cornwall Police are asking drivers to respect temporary limits and not put roadworkers’ lives at risk.
