Truro marks VJ Day with a quiet service in Victoria Gardens

Saturday morning will bring a pause to the centre of Truro. On 15 August, a short remembrance service in Victoria Gardens will mark VJ Day, the day in 1945 that brought the Second World War to a close.

The gathering is small by design. There is no procession or long programme, just a few quiet minutes to remember those who served in the Far East and the war’s final chapter.

A short service in Victoria Gardens

The service is led by the Truro Branch of the Royal British Legion and takes place in Victoria Gardens on Saturday 15 August. People are asked to gather from 10.30am, with the service beginning at 11.00am.

It commemorates Victory over Japan Day, known as VJ Day, on 15 August 1945. That date marked the end of the Second World War, months after victory had already been declared in Europe. The event has been shared by Truro City Council.

Reflecting at the Burma Star plaque

Throughout the day, residents and visitors are invited into Victoria Gardens to reflect and pay their respects at the Burma Star Association (Truro Branch) plaque.

The plaque is dedicated to the memory of Earl Mountbatten of Burma, the Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in South East Asia. You will find it at the top of the gardens, near Pollen, set into granite among the roses.
