Why Boscawen Street in Truro will stay shut until November

If you have tried to drive through the middle of Truro this week and found the road blocked off, you are not imagining it. Boscawen Street and Lower Lemon Street are now under 24/7 traffic management, and the closures are set to run for two months.

What’s happening on Boscawen Street

Cormac began the traffic management for the works on Monday 7 September, and it will remain in place until Friday 6 November. The job is a further round of repairs to the granite setts, the cobbles that make up much of Boscawen Street, focusing on sections that have not been repaired before. Six locations along the street have been identified as needing work, and in each one the setts will be lifted, cleaned and relaid.

The work on Lower Lemon Street

Around the corner, similar repairs are under way on the granite paving of Lower Lemon Street. The affected sections are outside Mannings Hotel, outside Michael Spiers, and on the opposite side of the road. Cormac will remove the paving, rebuild the foundation underneath where it is needed, and reset the granite to leave a safer, more durable surface behind.

Why the closures need to stay in place

Cormac has said the road closures and round-the-clock traffic management have to stay in place for the full period, both for safety and to give the materials time to cure properly once they are laid. The aim is to have everything finished before the Remembrance Sunday parade and the run of events leading into Christmas.

Getting around while the work continues

An alternative route will be signposted for drivers, and Cormac says pedestrian access to every property along both streets will be maintained throughout. Anyone with questions about the works can call Cormac on 0300 1234 222.
